Chin augmentation, also known as genioplasty, is a procedure by which a chin that is too small in appearance is enhanced for improved balance between the upper, mid and lower face. The effects of chin augmentation are most notable in the profile and oblique views of the face. While the degree of augmentation of the chin may range from a subtle to a major change in the facial aesthetic appearance, its powerful effect of creating harmony between the facial features is often overlooked.
Chin Augmentation Procedure
Chin augmentation is typically performed in one of two ways. The more common approach is the placement of a chin implant through a small incision under the chin. During a chin implant procedure, a solid, but soft implant is used to enhance the size and shape of the chin. The implant is precisely contoured to meet the specific shape and size needed for each patient. The second option is a sliding genioplasty. A sliding genioplasty will allow Dr. Behmand to use your own chin bone to surgically glide it forward, still enhancing the size and shape of the chin but avoiding the use of an implant.
Occasionally, the chin may actually be larger than desired or protrude excessively from the face in the profile view. A chin reduction, or mentoplasty procedure, can soften the dominance of a prominent chin and feminize its masculine features. A square chin may also be reshaped to have softer, more feminine angles.
Chin surgery can also be a beautiful complement to the rhinoplasty procedure in the appropriately selected patient. While the chin is often overlooked when evaluating the aesthetics of the face, a more optimal profile is easily created by combining a newly refined shape of the nose with a balanced chin. These subtle changes together provide a striking overall improvement of the shape and aesthetics of the face. Chin implants and chin surgery may also be combined with liposuction of the neck for an improved contour, as well as in patients having facelift surgery.
Chin Augmentation Consultation
During your consultation with Dr. Behmand, you will be given the opportunity to discuss your surgical goals. Dr. Behmand may utilize life-size photographs of your face, or computer programs, to precisely measure your features. This gives you an opportunity to see a simulated representation of the surgical goals, and ensure that the desired results will be aesthetically pleasing to you.
In preparation for a sliding genioplasty, Dr. Behmand will determine the distance the chin bone should be brought forward for optimal results. In the case of genioplasty with an implant, Dr. Behmand will shape a piece of silicone into the desired chin shape. Unlike silicone breast implants, the implants used for facial surgery are solid and firm to the touch, similar to your own chin bone. Chin implants come in various shapes, sizes and proportions and can benefit both men and women. However, not all patients are candidates for chin augmentation surgery.
Chin Augmentation Surgery
The chin surgery procedure typically takes 1 to 2 hours, depending on which approach is taken. In the event that this is combined with a rhinoplasty or other facial procedure, this time will be extended accordingly.
Dr. Behmand will create a small incision under your chin to place an implant. For a sliding genioplasty, this incision will be placed inside the mouth. In either surgery, the scarring is minimal and often goes unnoticed. The chin implant will be secured in place by placing it inside an exact-sized pocket in front of the chin bone. It may be further secured in place with permanent sutures. In the case of sliding genioplasty, the chin bone is moved forward from inside the mouth into the same pocket. The advanced bone is then permanently secured in place using delicate but strong titanium mini-screws and plates. With mentoplasty, or chin reduction surgery, the incision is either made inside the mouth or underneath the chin. Dr. Behmand will then sculpt the bone to reduce or change the amount of projection and angularity until it is more aesthetically pleasing and proportionate with your other facial features.
After Chin Augmentation Surgery
For about one week after surgery the lower portion of your face may be bruised, tender and swollen. The discomfort can be easily managed by pain medicine and temporary numbness in this area is also common. None of the procedures discussed above affect the alignment of the teeth and do not rely on dental work either before or after the operation to achieve the desired outcome. It is crucially important that you follow all post-operative instructions which are provided to you prior to your procedure. We ask that you eat soft foods to ease movement and help protect the incision in your chin area during your initial recovery. We also ask that you take at least one week to rest in the comfort of your home. Based on your lifestyle, Dr. Behmand will provide you with the best instructions for limiting exercise and activity which generally extend through the first month after surgery and up to six weeks.
